Wearables have made physiological data continuous and cheap. They have not made it easy to interpret, and the gap between those two things causes real problems — people training through clear fatigue because a score said “recovered,” and people skipping useful sessions because a number was low after one poor night.
Baselines beat absolutes
Heart rate variability is the clearest example. Absolute values vary enormously between individuals for reasons that have nothing to do with fitness — age, genetics, measurement method, device placement. Comparing your figure to a friend’s, or to a population chart, tells you very little. Comparing this week’s rolling average to your own established baseline tells you something.
The same holds for resting heart rate. Yours is yours. A rise of several beats sustained across a few days is a signal; a single elevated morning after a late meal and a glass of wine is noise.
What the numbers are good at
- Catching accumulation. Multi-day trends surface fatigue before it becomes obvious.
- Making sleep visible. Total time in bed versus time asleep is often the most actionable thing on the screen — and unlike sleep-stage estimates, consumer devices measure duration reasonably well.
- Showing consequences. Seeing what alcohol, a late meal, or a short night does to your own overnight metrics is more persuasive than any general advice.
What they are not good at
Consumer devices are not diagnostic instruments. Sleep-stage breakdowns are estimates. Single-day scores compress complex physiology into a number that feels more authoritative than it is. And a readiness score has no knowledge of your training plan, your deadlines, or how you actually feel.
Use the data to inform the decision. Do not outsource the decision to it — and do not let a number override symptoms it cannot see.
A practical rule
Give a metric three to seven days before you act on it, and weight it against how you feel and how you are performing. If the numbers and your subjective state disagree persistently, that disagreement is itself worth discussing with a clinician. And if a device flags something concerning — an irregular rhythm notification, for instance — that is a reason for medical evaluation, not for further self-interpretation.
If tracking is increasing anxiety rather than reducing it, stepping back from daily scores is a legitimate and often correct choice.
